The son of German-born Mathias & Anna Marie (Rie) Boll, in 1860 he was a woolen mill worker living in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He married Katherine Messner August 26, 1862, and fathered Elmer Elsworth (b. 03/04/63), Mary Savilla (b. 12/31/64 - married John E. Baker), Edwin Lewis (b. 06/30/66), Salome Agnes (b. 09/28/68, d. 07/10/70), and Hiram Anthony (b. 06/18/72, d. 01/08/73).

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted from Lancaster County October 29, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg November 3 as a private with Co. C, 177th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and honorably discharged with his company August 5, 1863.

Katherine died in 1873, and he married Mary Wilhelmina Rowe, fathering Sarah Rena (b. 08/15/75, d. 11/13/77), Ira David (b. 04/19/78, d. 07/27/78), Albert Edmund (b. 07/07/79, d. 05/17/84), Ralph Diehl (b. 03/07/83), Harvey Roy (b. 02/22/86), Ethel Alma (b. 10/17/88, d. 02/15/1990 - married Norman Roy Hoover), Luther Homer (b. 03/01/92), and Anna Holda (b. 01/27/96 - married Elmer Ellsworth Grubb).

Cause of his death is listed as "carcinoma of bowels and pancreas."
