The daughter of William Nichol, Emily and her brother were orphaned in 1861 and lived in a boarding school in Peebles, Peeblesshire, Scotland for a short time before moving to London. While there Emily met Cooper Kirton a shipping agent for P & O Shipping and they married in Malta living there until after his death in 1915. They had at least ten children together. After Cooper's death she returned to London England where she lived until her death. Emily is buried in the same plot as her brother Robert.
