Arthur was on of nine children of Captain Cooper Kirton and Emily Jane Nichol. He immigrated to the US 15 September 1897. In 1911 he married Amy Gordon Mathieson. They had no children. Arthur was an engineer and travelled extensively. At one point his worked as a machinist with Westinghouse.
