Son of William Nichol, an Englsh wine merchant who lived for a time in India, Robert was orphaned in 1861 and he and his sister lived in a boarding school in Peebles, Pebblesshire, Scotland for a brief period of time before moving to London. Robert died at the age of nineteen of a heart ailment. Prior to his death he was well respected as a devoted worker within the Presbyterian Church and in their missions and Young Men's Society work.
