The following is from the "History of York County, Pennsylvania (Volume v.2)," by George Reeser Prowell:
"Jane and her father James Frew, a sister, and five of Jane and William Neely's children came to America by boat. At that time they had to have their food for the long trip. After loading her family and all supplies on [the] boat, she remembered something that she had forgotten. So [she] went on shore to get whatever. When she came back the boat had pulled away from shore and she was left. Someone seeing her trouble rowed a small boat with her to the vessel so she could accompany her family for the long trip. . .The voyage was long and dangerous. The sailing vessel sprung a leak in a storm. All the male hands or passengers had to take turns at the pumps, while those not on duty were sent below and the hatches nailed down."
Jane died of pneumonia on January 15, 1893 while visiting her daughter Margaret in Philadelphia.
