John Neely was born in 1844 in Gordonville, Pennsylvania. He lived his entire life in Lancaster and York counties, Pennsylvania.
He started out as a butcher, a trade he learned from his brother Thomas and which he followed for 12 years. After leaving the butchering business, he took up cattle raising. He married Mary Elizabeth Johnson in 1870. They had three children: William, Walter, and Robert. Mary died in 1888. Four years after her death, and at the age of 47, he remarried Mary Barbara Snyder of Peach Bottom Township, York County. They had three children: Harry, Marion, and Paulene. Paulene died in infancy.
In 1888, he bought a 50 acre farm near Airville, Pennsylvania in York County. The 1900 census and 1910 census list his profession as a "Farmer."
