Leslie R. Coats--Redfield

Redfield -- Former Spink County Commissioner Leslie R. Coats, 83, Redfield, died Sunday, Oct. 30, 1988 in Community Memorial Hospital in Redfield.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday [Nov 2] in First Congregational Church in Redfield. The Rev. Barbara Archer will officiate.

Burial will be in Doland Cemetery under the direction of Coleman-Thelen Funeral Chapel of Redfield.

Leslie R. Coats was born near Delaware, Iowa, on Aug. 22, 1905, to E. L. and Verona Coats. In 1908 he and his family moved to a farm near Doland.

He married Roslea Baer on July 29, 1935. They farmed near Doland until they moved into Doland in 1954. He was employed by Independent Oil Company for 10 years before he retired. In 1979 they moved to Redfield.

He served on the Belle Plaine Township Board and Federal Home Administration Board. In Doland he was on the city council, fire department and was director of the Doland Service Club. He was a charter member of East Spink County Lions Club. He was a Spink County commissioner from 1966 to 1978.

He was a member of First Congregational Church. He was a member of Doland Masonic Lodge 142 AF&AM and served as master. He was a member of Corona Chapter 87 of Order of Eastern Star and was a worthy patron for 10 years. He was a member of Aberdeen Consistory and was a 32-degree Mason. He was a member of Yelduz Shrine and Shrine Patrol.

Survivors include his wife of Redfield; one sister, Mrs. E.L. (Norma) Thomas of Rapid City; and five brothers, Merle Coats of Rapid City, Maurice Coats of Virginia Beach, Va., Louis Coats of Taylorsville, N. C., Ronald Coats of Verndale, Minn., and Francis Coats of Doland.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
