A native of Doland, South Dakota, he retired from the United States Army as a Lieutenant Colonel. He was called into the service in 1941 and was discharged in 1945. He was called back into service in 1950 and retired from the Army April 1, 1967. He then went to work for the Army Corps of Engineers and retired in 1976. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach, VA.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Esther Coats; two sons, John B. Coats and wife Carol of Colorado Springs, CO and Max M. Coats and wife Leslie of Richmond, VA; a brother, Frances Coats of Doland, SD; and seven grandchildren, Gayle Coats, Lauren Coats, Kelly Coats and Katie Coats of Richmond, VA and Karen Coats, Kim Coats and John Coats, all of Colorado Springs, CO. He was predeceased by a sister, Norma; and brothers, Leslie, Bill, Howard and Merlie.
A funeral service with military honors will be conducted Sunday in the Princess Anne Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with Rev. Albert G. Butzer, III officiating. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel is handling the arrangements.
