Legionnaire Killed Here
Charles Hilpert, son of Mrs. Will Hoffman of Susanville was killed instantly while working last Friday on the Riley Ranch a short distance from Lakeview, Oregon. Death resulted from a derrick toppled on the deceased severely crushing him about the body.
Hilpert was born in Salt Lake City 35 years ago where he spent his early boyhood. He enlisted in the U.S. Army August 7, 1918 and received his honorable discharge in January 1919 after spending five months in the
service. He was an employee of the Red River Lumber Company of Westwood for several years before going to Oregon and was well known there.
The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the Philbrook-Quinn parlor in Susanville, Rev. S.P. Galt officiating. The funeral was conducted under the auspices of Thomas Tucker Post No. 204 of the American Legion. A
volley was fired over his grave by the firing squad and taps was blown.

W. G. Hilpert, 1080 Eleventh East Street, received word Sunday of the death at Susanville, Calif., Saturday of his brother, Charles Hilpert, who was injured in an automobile accident. Mr. Hilpert was born in this city in 1890. Surviving are his mother, his brother here and another brother, John R. Hilpert and a sister, Mrs. F. Palmquist.
