22 May 1873 Carl Leonard Hilpert immigrated from Germany. He was naturalized in San Francisco 31 August 1875. In 1881 he married Nancy Catherine Bentley in Fremont County, Iowa. They had three children that lived (Mary Alice, John Robert and William George), but in 1988 the fourth child, Leona died shortly after her birth. Nancy also died about the same time.

About 1889 Carl Leonard took his three children (John, William, and Mary Alice) and headed west by train from Nebraska to Utah to be a miner. In May 1890 Carl Leonard married Marie Walti in Salt Lake City, Utah and in September 1890, twins were born: Charles and Albert. With the new babies, Marie couldn't handle the older children (Carl's three and her daughter Marie from a previous marriage).

The four children were placed in an orphanage. The two girls eventually found people to live with but the two sons (John and William) were kick out of the orphanage when Carl ran out of money. Carl was away mining and Marie would not allow them to move back home, so they lived on the street.

In Sept 1892 a daughter Leona was born and in February 1894 another son Herman was born. In 1895 Leona was killed by a streetcar when she wondered in front of it and soon after Carl and Marie were divorced. Then Carl's son John came to live with him. William had found people to live with.

In 1898 Herman was killed in an accident. In 1902 Marie went to court to say she could not handle the twins so the courd sent them to live with their father.
