Born at Fenton Barns near Dirleton, East Lothian, Scotland where his father, Hugh Bertram, was farm steward. Named for the farm manager, noted agriculturalist George Hope. Came to Canada in 1865, following his brother John, and sister Anne. Opened a hardware store in Lindsay Ontario. Married Christina Murray in Quebec in 1870. Moved to Toronto in 1876. Father of six children - John, Charlotte (died as an infant), Florence, Mabel, George and Douglas. Unitarian Church Elder. Involved in many businesses, including the Bertram Engine and Shipbuilding Works. Elected as a Liberal Member of Parliament in 1897 for Centre Toronto. Died in office in 1900 of cancer.
