Youngest child of Hugh Bertram and Isabella Mack. Born at Fenton Barns near Dirleton, East Lothian, Scotland, where her father was the farm stewart. Named after the farm leaseholder's daughter, Charlotte Hope. Christened and buried at Dirleton Kirk. Sibling to John, Anne, Alexander, Isabella, Hugh, George, Agnes, Peter and Helen, all of whom emigrated to Canada in a trickle between 1860 and the 1890's, including her parents, Hugh and Isabella. Two of her brothers became Canadian MPs. Poor wee thing was left behind to sleep in Scottish soil, while the rest went a'wae t' Canada.
