John was a soldier in the Black Hawk War. He served as a Private in Capt. Ozias Hale's Company, 4th Regiment, 3rd Bridgade, of Illinois Mounted Volunteers, called into service of the United States, on the requistion of Gen. Henry Atkinson, by the Governor's proclamation dated May 15, 1832. Mustered out Aug. 16, 1832. Enrolled June 19, 1832. This company was made up of men from Pike County, Illinois.
