Charles Omar Hathaway, 83, passed away on March 21, 2012 at the Kindred Care Hospice in Scottsdale, Arizona. Charles was born May 9, 1928 in Diagonal, Iowa to Eljay Garfield and MaryJane Carvey Hathaway. He was married to Phyllis Wyler and DeEtte VanKirk, but, both marriages ended in divorce. Charles had one son, Joel Jackson Hathaway b;17 Sept. 1946, d;21 June 1964.

Although Charles was born and raised in Iowa, at the age of 16 he left home and headed for California. He served in the army during WWII after which he made his living working in the food industry managing resturants and motels in several states.

He was preceded in death by his parents: his son Joel Jackson, six sisters, Isobel, Ruth, Edith, Rose, Lillian, Patricia and three brothers, Harold, Bob and Harlan.

Left to cherish his memory are two sisters Althea Housman and Sylvia Petersen, both of Winterset, Iowa and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.CHARLES HATHAWAY, ARIZONA


Charles "Chuck" O. Hathaway, 83, of Phoenix, Ariz., died March 21, 2012, after a lingering illness.
Charles was born in Diagonal, Iowa, the youngest son of Eljay and Mary Jane Carver Hathaway. He attended school in Patterson, Iowa, and at the age of 18 he joined the Army, serving some of his time in Korea. On Dec. 14, 1968, Charles married DeEtte Vankirk in Minnesota and adopted her children, Michael and Tammi. They divorced in 1978. Charles lived in Minnesota and California before settling in Phoenix, Ariz., several years ago.
He is survived by two sisters; Althea Housman and Sylvia Peterson, both of Winterset.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Harold Hathaway, Bob Hathaway and Harlan in infancy; and six sisters: Isobel Griswold, Ruth Evans, Edith Posh, Rose Stuart, Flo Terry and Patricia Murphy.
The body was cremated and returned to Iowa, where a private service will be held at a later date.
