DRYDEN - Velma L. Wilken, 85, a well-known resident of the Dryden area for the past 60 years, died Thursday, April 20, 1995, at her home.
She was born Nov. 27, 1909, to Maurice and Rosetta (Deos) Sharrard at Hermiston, Ore. She moved with her family to Willow Creek, Ore., where she grew up and received her early education. She graduated from high school in Arlington, Ore., in 1927.
She married George E. Wilken on July 24, 1931, at Vancouver. They lived in Portland, Ore., and later The Dalles, Ore., until moving to Peshastin in 1935. They moved to Dryden in 1940, where they later planted and operated a fruit orchard. Mrs. Wilken also worked as a cook for the Dryden School District and later the Peshastin-Dryden School District until her retirement in 1960.
Mrs. Wilken attended the Dryden Community Church, and was a 50-year member of Cashmere Grange No. 380. She was also a member of Pomona, state and national Granges, the Dryden Improvement Club, Dryden Arts and Crafts Club. She served on the Chelan County Election Board and was a former member of the Chelan County Fair Board. She was very active with the Chelan County Fair, serving as chaperone for the fair royalty. She was a fair judge at Chelan and Grant county fairs and at Waterville for the North Central District Fair.
Mrs. Wilken is survived by a son, Maurice of Brewster; a daughter, Georgia Rae Rich of East Wenatchee; two brothers, Eugene of Portland, Ore., and Francis of Boise, Idaho; three sisters, Bebe Munkers of Heppner, Ore., Blanche Simms of Arlington, Ore., and Billie Walker of Los Olivos, Calif.; two grandchildren; and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1978, two brothers and a great-granddaughter.
