Eugene was born in Eastern Oregon and grew up on the Sharrard family ranch with seven brothers and sisters. His first job was with Union Pacific Railroad. While working on the railroad, he met his future wife, Mary Ruscigno. After a four-year, long-distance letter writing courtship, Eugene and Mary married in Portland in 1940 and set up housekeeping in Arlington, Ore. With the start of World War II, Eugene and Mary returned to Portland, where he worked in the shipyards. After the war, Eugene was employed by the Portland School District, where he worked until his retirement in 1977. Although Eugene and Mary had no children, their home was always open to their nieces and nephews and was a gathering place for family.
Eugene's wife, Mary, preceded him in death in 2000 after 60 years of marriage. Eugene and Mary are dearly loved by family and friends and will be missed. At the request of Eugene, there will be no funeral.
