Howard served with the United States Army during WWII from October 1942 � November 1945. He served in the Pacific and was in the first wave to hit the beach of both the Island of Leyte and in the Philippines and on the Island of Okinawa. He was awarded the combat Infantry Badge for direct contact with the enemy, three Purple Hearts, two for shrapnel in the leg and back and one for a gunshot wound through his mouth and lungs. He also received a Bronze Star, a Gold Star, Good Conduct Medal, the U.S. Presidential Unit Citation and the Philippine Presidential Citation.

Howard E. Stock, 88, of Lone Tree died Sunday, August 7, 2005 at his home in Lone Tree following an extended illness.

Funeral services for Howard will be held at 1:30 P.M. on Tuesday, August 9, 2005 at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree. Lyle Beaver will officiate the services. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery with military rites provided by the Lone Tree American Legion John L. Mumm Post 457. Casketbearers will be Kurt Karnsted, Dick Elliott, Jack Larew, Keith Rayner, Robert Pennebaker, William Schlapkohl. Honorary casketbearers will be Elmer Gallaway, Pat Wade, Gary Smothers, Harry McGrath, Dan Duffey and Lowell Baker. Following the services at the cemetery, a gathering will be held at the Lone Tree American Legion. Visitation for Howard will be held on Monday, August 8, 2005 from 4:00 -8:00 P.M. at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree. Memorials may be directed to the Lone Tree Fire and Rescue, Iowa City Hospice, American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association in memory of Howard. Howard Edward Stock was born on March 4, 1917 in Lone Tree, Iowa the son of William F. and Fredericka (Rossman) Stock. On October 6, 1940, Howard was united in marriage to Jean Musser in Burlington, Iowa. Howard served with the United States Army during WWII from October 1942 - November 1945. He served in the Pacific and was in the first wave to hit the beach of both the Island of Leyte and in the Philippines and on the Island of Okinawa. He was awarded the combat Infantry Badge for direct contact with the enemy, three Purple Hearts, two for shrapnel in the leg and back and one for a gunshot wound through his mouth and lungs. He also received a Bronze Star, a Gold Star, Good Conduct Medal, the U.S. Presidential Unit Citation and the Philippine Presidential Citation. Howard was an independent oil jobber for 22 years, selling Kerr McGee Oil Products. Howard was a member of the John L. Mumm Post 457 American Legion, serving as past commander and was a life time member, Abner Lodge #535, serving as past Master of the Lodge, Lone Tree Chamber of Commerce for several years, Lone Tree Fire Department for 25 years and retired fire chief., member of the Veteran's Trail in Coralville, a Charter member of the 96th Infantry Division and an active member of the D.A.V.

Howard will be deeply missed by his wife, two daughters, five grandchildren.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Elmer, Harry and Gilbert and three sisters, Ester Jensen, Hazel Kutcher and Wilma Idle.
