CARRIE ELLEN ALLEN
Carrie Ellen Allen, eldest of eight children of John S. and Elizabeth Stearns, was born Dec. 20, 1872, in York county, Nebraska. She came by covered wagon with her parents to a farm near Russell where she grew to womanhood and became a school teacher.
She married Walker Winfield Allen, July 11, 1894, in the farm home near Russell. They spent 30 years of their married life on a farm north of Lucas, where their son Roy and wife, now reside.
To this union were born seven children, Valeria, who passed away in infancy, Edna, wife of George Cherrie of Canon City, Colo., Roy J., of Lucas, Claude M. of Ft. Collins, Colo., Glenn W. of Canon City, Colo., Lois Martha, who passed away on July 5, 1922, at the age of 12 years and Keith of Chariton. Other survivors are a brother, Joseph B. Stearns of Rice Lake, Wis.; eight grandchildren and a score of nieces and nephews.
Mr. and Mrs. Allen were spending the winter in Canon City, Colo., with their son, Glenn and family and near their daughter, Edna and family when she was suddenly stricken Monday, Feb. 4, with a coronary thrombosis and passed away quietly and quickly.
Mrs. Allen loved her church and church friends where she served and worked all her life.
Funeral services were held Friday, Feb. 8, at the Presbyterian church in Lucas at 2 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Versteeg and the Rev. Beals. Burial in Chariton cemetery. Miley Funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
