Whilst on route from New York, departing 3 October 1942, to Manchester Convoy SC-104 came under attack and the s.s. Ashworth was sunk by U-221 captained by Hans-Hartwig Trojer . The position of the sinking was 53° 05'N, 44° 06'W - Grid AJ 9146.
James was the son of Robert and Ethel Skelton and husband of Irene Skelton, of West Hartlepool, Co. Durham.
