James Meeks (aged 53 years) was a Fireman and Trimmer on the Merchant Navy's s.s. Ashworth on its last voyage as a part of Convoy SC-104.

Whilst on route from New York, departing 3 October 1942, to Manchester Convoy SC-104 came under attack and the s.s. Ashworth was sunk by U-221 captained by Hans-Hartwig Trojer . The position of the sinking was 53° 05'N, 44° 06'W - Grid AJ 9146.

Fireman and Trimmer James Meeks was the son of John Watson Meeks and Alice Meeks. He left a widow, Mary Meeks, of South Shields, Co. Durham.
