Entered Confederate service in March 1861, Holly Springs, Mississippi, Old Company B, 9th Miss Inf. Joined staff of Gen. Joe Wheeler July 20, 1862 at Holly Springs. Wounded five times in the war. Promoted to lieutenant colonel, 12th Ala Cav in late 1864. Surrendered at Holly Springs 23 April, 1865. Spent a lot of time in Mexico and South America after the war. One of the three men tried in the shooting death of J.W. Calder in Dallas, Texas, September 4, 1878, Pointer was acquitted. The principal witness for the prosecution, Capt. Ira Harris, Jr., stated he did not believe Pointer drew or fired a pistol. Spent his final years promoting railroad bonds. Applied for a commission for war with Spain in 1898, but war ended before his application was acted on. Since he seems to have died after midnight, I have put the date as July 10, which agrees with all newspaper accounts of his death. Many inaccuracies have crept into his bio over the years, and I have corrected these and posted most of what I know about him at Civil War Talk forum.
