BETTY JEAN PETERSON CROSS

Our sweet mom passed away this Monday. Born August 1, 1926, she was the blue-eyed, black-haired child of Ida Jane and Magnus Ray Peterson. Their happy home had sisters, Marlene (Ivan) Flint, Wanda (Burt) Barrett, and brothers Elwin (Dolly), Pete (Lucille) and LaVar.

Betty Jean marched off to Columbus Elementary School, Irving Jr. and South High. She attended the McCune School of Art and Music, frustrating instructors with her breezy disinterest in the talents she possessed.

She worked summers with her little sister and best friend, Marlene, in Island Park, Idaho, both wearing tight jeans, plaid flannels, Jantzen sweaters and moccasins.

Daughter of a policeman, she was living on the Police Target Range when a dashing man in a pace car convertible pulled up. She said, "I'm gonna ride in that car." She did, and rode into marriage with Jack L Cross – her partner and father of their children Morgan and Jami (Gainer) Waldbillig. Granddaughter, Blair, arrived when mom was 78 giving her renewed interest in plushies and pop-up books.

A stay-at-home mom, this piano teacher charged $2 a lesson for the kiddies she considered her own, and their mom's lessons were free – the value she placed on friendship. Among other things, Jean worked as a cashier at the Temple Square Hotel Coffee Shop (David O. McKay called her Jeannie.) She was a 20-year veteran of ZCMI Downtown.

Mom was a prolific reader of mysteries – often saying, "Who knows what evil lurks in the heart of men? The shadow knows." She loved to travel but could never get through airport security in recent years without a personal screening – to her amazement.

Her love was her family. As her children, we were so lucky to have you, mom.

Marlene and Ivan held a beautiful space in her heart as did the rest of those cheerful Flints. Loved those fun-filled years of great dinners!

Mom had dementia and once asked, "Do you remember who I am? I'm sure I don't resemble the person I was." You are beautiful.
