Funeral Services for William P. Bowles
Funeral services for Wm. Perkins Bowles, 78, of the Emerson community, who was found dead early last Thursday morning, June 6, 1940, were held at Lewis Bros, funeral chapel here Saturday morning at 10 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. C. E. Griswold, pastor of the Baptist church. Pall bearers were six of his grandsons, including Cecil, Max, Rodney and Guy Libbee, Wilfred Scott and Scott Booth. Interment was made in the Emerson cemetery.
For a number of years Mr. Bowles had been making his home with his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Booth west of Emerson but since the death of his brother-in-law, Lucullus Sanford, occurring several months ago, the family had been living in the home of Mr. Sanford's widow, Mrs. Eva Bowles Sanford, located in the same neighborhood.
Early Thursday morning, Mr. Bowles was missing from the Sanford home and an investigation was made by Mr. Booth, who found the dead body on a couch in the partly vacated house on the Booth farm. There was a bullet wound in the forehead and a .22 calibre rifle, with an empty shell in the chamber, lying across his breast. At his side, a note was also found, indicating that he had planned to take his life. Contents of the note, identified as the handwriting of the aged man, which was unsigned, revealed that he had been brooding over "past and future."
Coroner James O'Donnell, of Hannibal was called but after talking with relatives, deemed an inquest unnecessary. Members of the family stated that he frequently went to the house on the Booth farm to work on his records. He had been in failing health for some time.
A native of Marion, he was born June 21, 1861 and had spent his entire life in this county. His parents were the late John T. and Katherine Ralls Bowles, also natives of Marion and prominent in their day. Early in life he was united in marriage to Miss Annie Scott who was the daughter of John and Martha Scott. She preceded him in death November 2, 1893.
During young manhood he followed the occupation of farming and was a live stock buyer for a number of years. During the last 24 years, he was deputy county assessor but was compelled to give up the work this year because of ill health. He received his first deputy appointment under the late George W. Moore. At the time of his death he was treasurer of the Emerson consolidated school district. He was a member of the Emerson Baptist church.
By reason of his many years as deputy county assessor he had a wide acquaintance and was held in highest esteem by all who knew him.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. R. H. Booth of Emerson; Mrs. G. W. Libbee, south of Palmyra; Mrs. W. C. Phillips of Willis, Mich.; twelve grandchildren; one brother, Gratz Bowles and one sister, Mrs. Eva Sanford of Emerson. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Frank Scott, and a sister, Mrs. Ella Banks.
