DEATH OF CLARENCE BAKER
Former Carthage Man Died at Tulsa Last Night

He Was Assistant Postmaster Here Several Years, Going to Oklahoma in 1917


Clarence Baker, for many years assistant postmaster here died at 6:30 o'clock last night at his home, 3601 South Newport, Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was 70.
Mr. Baker had been ill about two weeks. He suffered from a heart ailment.
Born northeast of Carthage on what is known as the old Baker place, Mr. Baker grew up in this district. He became a member of the Carthage post office force at a comparatively early age and through his ability was made assistant postmaster, a position he held for years prior to his retirement in 1917. He resigned to move to Okmulgee, where he embarked in the grocery business.
Later he left Okmulgee and operated groceries in both Henryetta and Tulsa. At the time of his death he was in the employ of the Bethlehem Supply Company.
He is survived by his wife, one son, Richard, U.S. Navy, who was at his father's side, having obtained a leave when informed of Mr. Baker's critical illness; a grandaughter, Ethel Louise Baker, of Fredonia, KS., daughter of deceased son Chester; a sister, Mrs. Mrs. W. E. 'Linnie' Wilson, living northeast of Carthage and a brother Roscoe Baker, living near Carthage. Richard Baker is married, his wife being a Tulsa girl.
Mrs. Arch Thornton, mother of Rachel Thornton and who died here October 8, was a sister of Mrs. Baker
Mrs. O. R. Mealey of Carthage and Mrs. W. C. Robbins of Okmulgee, formerly of Carthage, also are sister-in-laws of Mrs. Baker.
Mr. Baker was born June 12, 1873. His parents were William and Sarah Kiefer Baker. He was married here May 8, 1901 to Miss Lily Mealey.
Mr. Baker was a member of the Christian church and was active in the church here during his Carthage residence. He transferred his membership when he moved to Oklahoma.
He was widely known and respected here and the new of his passing comes as a shock to old friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Knell service home and burial in Park Cemetery beside the body of the son, Chester, who died a number of years ago.
