Lonaconlng, June 5—Hugh Henry Atkinson, 86, of 16 Allegany street, died yesterday afternoon at his home. He had been ill two weeks.
Born in Toronto, Canada, October 27, 1858, the son of the late Hugh and Elizabeth Atkinson, he came with his parents to Eckhart Mines at the close of the Civil War and lived there two years. The family then moved to Lonaconing. They were among the pioneer settlers and at which time there were only three coal mines and company houses.
Mr. Atkinson was a driver in Jackson Mine six years and a digger for five years. He later drove the delivery team for the Cooperative Store located at the Odd Fellows Hall. He was with the company 38 years, 27 years as manager, retiring in 1921. He was a member of the Jehovah Witnesses.
He married Margaret Muir of Lonaconing, August 25, 1881. Besides his widow, he leaves seven children: Hugh Atkinson, Lonaconing; Mrs. P. R. Savage, Lonaconing; John M. Atkinson, Rock Springs, Wyo.; Henry W. Atkinson, Denver, Colo.; Mrs. John Brodbeck, Lonaconing; Mrs. James Richmond, Lonaconing; and Mrs. Thomas M. Holmes, Lonaconing. A brother John R. Atkinson, Columbia Street, Cumberland; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren also survive.
This is the first death in the immediate family of Mr. and Mrs Atkinson since their marriage. There are 50 descendants.
Services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m. Harry Pearson, of Jehovah Witnesses, will officiate, and interment will be made in Hillcrest Burial Park, Cumberland.
