Retired Farmer Called by Death
Rites for E.M. Armstrong Held at Home of Son - Was Ill Less Than Week

E.M. Armstrong, resident of Flandreau community since 1917, died at 5:30 o'clock Monday morning at the home of his son Roy, northeast of this city. He was 78 years of age. With exception of undergoing an operation for appendicitis a few years ago Mr. Armstrong had always enjoyed exceptionally good health until he was stricken on Tuesday night of last week.

Ever since coming here he had lived on the farm where he spent his last days. After the death of Mrs. Armstrong in 1920 the place was occupied as a home and operated by his son Roy, with whom he continued to make his home.

There the last rites for him were held Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Daniel Knox Ford of Second Presbyterian church, with the honors of the Odd Fellows fraternity accorded him. Interment was made in Union cemetery beside his wife, a daughter Florence who died in 1920, and a son Lester, who passed away in 1932.

The court house was closed during the funeral hour in respect to Roy Armstrong, member of the county board.

Mr. Armstrong was born April 17, 1861, at Odell, Ill. As a young man he learned the mason trade and followed it until he came to Flandreau and purchased a farm in 1917. At the age of 29 he was married to Josephine Hercher (sic) at Sioux City, Iowa, after which they took up residence at Moville, Iowa, where all the children were born and where they continued to make their home until coming to Flandreau.

Surviving him are four sons - George, of Sioux Falls; Roy and Frantz, Flandreau, and Charles, of Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Charles had enjoyed a 90-day furlough from army service after returning from Hawaii, visiting relatives here and had gone to the southern post only a few days before his father was stricken. He returned yesterday to attend the last rites.

Mr. Armstrong is also survived by a brother, Goerge (sic), living at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Lester, at Pleasantville, Iowa.
