Tragic news has reached Gonzales County the last few days with families receiving word of the death of two soldiers and three wounded. Yesterday’s Inquirer carried the story of the death of Sgt. John B. Rightmer who was killed in action on December 22 in Italy. Four messages were received by families’ of men from this county this morning and one last Saturday.

Mr. and Mrs. Earnest Bailey of Bebe, Texas, received a telegram this morning from the War Department stating that their son, Corp. Lester A. Bailey has been killed in action in defense of his country on December 22, in Italy.

Corp. Bailey was born on May 4, 1921 at Monthalia. He attended school at Monthalia and was engaged in farming before going into the army. He left with the National Guard and had seen action in Tunisia. Surviving are his parents, 3 sisters, Mrs. Esther Richter, Mabel, and Glenna B., three brothers at home, Hulan, Winston, and Durwood, and two brothers in the service Sgt. Boyd O. Bailey and Sgt. Cecil C. Bailey.
