GROOMETOWN - Barbara Stanford Atkinson, better known as Nannie, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2005 at the age of 71.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Groometwown United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Morton and the Rev. Phillip Poole officiating. Nannie will be laid to rest next to her husband of 47 years, Charlie C. Atkinson in the church cemetery following the service.

Besides her loving husband, Barbara was preceded in death by a grandson, Eric Atkinson and her parents, Clarance and Dorothy Groome Stanford.

Her gentle and loving spirit and inner strength and perseverance were an inspiration to all who knew her.

Barbara was an active member of Groometown United Methodist Church where throughout her years of service, she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school.

She will be missed by all who knew her, especially her family; children, Chuck and Debbie Atkinson of Greensboro, Mickey and Helen Atkinson of Greensboro, Dianne and Donald Thomas of High Point and Pat and Jeff Bowers of Jamestown; grandchildren, Stephanie Atkinson, Wesley Atkinson, Jessica and Jo Atkinson, Khristi and Katie Thomas and Jodi and Anna Bowers; stepmother Mabel Stanford; and sisters, Virginia Quate of Wilmington, Jane Harden and Sue Warf, both of Greensboro.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at George Brothers Funeral Service.

The family wishes to give special thanks to Hospice and Moses Cone Extended Care facility for their kind and loving care.
