Charlie Calvin Atkinson, Sr., better known as "Pawpaw" died in his sleep Friday night, Oct. 29, 1999, at the age of 67.

Funeral will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 1999 at Groometown UMC. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

He was a loving family man who was a good Samaritan to everyone he met. He retired from business at the age of 47 but continued to do volunteer work for others for the past 20 years.

Charlie was the founder and operator of A&W Meat Company. He was an 82nd Airborne Army veteran during the Korean war. He was also an active member of Groometown United Methodist Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher.

Survivors are his wife of 47 years, Barbara Atkinson; sons and daughters-in-law, Chuck and Debbie Atkinson and Mickey and Helen Atkinson of Greensboro; daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and Donald Thomas of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C. and Pat and Jeff Bowers of Jamestown; mother, Retha Odom of Georgia; brother, Bill Odom; sisters, JoAnn Huey and Linda East, all of Georgia; grandchildren, Stephanie Atkinson, Wesley Atkinson, Jessica Atkinson, Jo Atkinson, Khristi Thomas, Katie Thomas, Jodi Bowers and Anna Bowers. He was preceded in death by one grandchild, Eric Atkinson.

The family will receive friends 7-9 p.m. Sunday at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel and other times at the family residence.
