ORSON A. SWART
Orson A. Swart, veteran business man of this section of the county, died at the family home In thls village Tuesday noon aged 75 years, after a lingering Illness of nearly two years from the Infirmities of age.

He was the son of Samuel Swart and was born In this township October 4, 1841 and has spent his entire life in Margaretvllle and the near vicinity. June 12, 1875 he married Alice Augusta Decker, who died October 22, 1893 leaving three children. Howard D., Fred M., and Kathryn A., who survive their father. His second marriage was to Mary Dimmlck, January 25, 1898 and she, with the children just named, survives him.

His first business experience was in New Kingston where he clerked for W. R. Swart. Theses was in the days when goods came from Kingston by team. From New Kingston he came to Margaretville and started business in the store now owned by L. Bussy & Co., as firm of W. R. Swart & Bro. In 1876 he began business for himself purchasing the business of G. G. Decker in the store which he and his sons have for some years conducted. After purchasing the Decker business he some time later took into partnership J. H. Hitt, who continued with him for 20 years. When Mr. Hitt retired from the firm Mr. Swart took his two sons into partnership under the firm name of Swart Mercantile Co., and this is the firm name today. The business experience above related extended over a period of 52 years and during that time Mr. Swart gained a name for honesty and integrity than none has ever disputed. No one better than he can deserve the highest compliment we know "He was an Honest Man."

He was as prominent in the religious and official life of the village as he was in the business community. He has been a member of the official board of the Methodist Church for over 25 years and upon him much of the responsibility of the church has always been placed. He has been Village President, Town Clerk, Village trustee, and the holder of many other positions of trust. For many years he has been the Treasurer of the local Masonic Lodge.

The funeral was held from his late home yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Earle N. Hubbard officiating. Interment was in the Margaretville cemetery.
