Biography upon memorial transfer 2 May 2021:
Store Era Died Day Fred Swart Ended Business
Fred M. Swart, who died at the home from last week, was the last Margaretvile businessman who came up in the era of the cracker-barrel philosophy of merchandising.
He was born Oct. 13, 1879, on Walnut street in Margaretville in the house now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Christian. He was the oldest son of Orson and Augusta Decker Swart.
Following graduation from Margaretville high school and attendance at New York university, he worked in the Peoples National bank until 1901 when his father's failing health induced him to enter the firm of Swart and Hitt, which did a large grocery, dry goods and butter business. Mr. Hitt retired a few years later to become postmaster, and the firm name was changed to Swart Mercantile Co. and a younger brother, Howard, became a partner.
Because of the younger brother's ill health, the firm was dissolved in 1941. The store was sold to George Harris, who later disposed of it to Shafer Brothers of Albany, who now operate under the name of Margaretville Department store.
Fred Swart and his wife, the former Marian Crogan, a language teacher in the Margaretville high school, whom he married in 1923, moved from an apartment over the store to the family farm on the hillside northwest of the village. The farm had been purchased late in the 19th century by Mr. Swart's father as a location to secure milk for making butter, which the firm distributed along the Hudson valley. Butter made on the farm by Mrs. John Cole took first prize at the Chicago World's fair in 1898.
Funeral services were held Saturday from the Adven Christian church in Margaretville, with Rev. Richard Thurston officiating. Burial followed in Margaretville cemetery, the land for which had been donated by Mr. Swart's ancestor.
Besides Mrs. Swart, the nearest survivors are nephew and nieces. They are Howard Swart and Mrs. Mel Torbeck of Poughkeepsie. Mrs. Stuart Talbot of Vernon Center, N. Y., and Miss Donna Crogan of Islip, L. I.
