The Herald Palladium carried an obituary for Elsie Backus on 16 Jun 1978 and it reads: “Baroda-Mrs. Elsie Backus, 75, of Wyoming, Mich., formerly of Glendora, died Thursday evening at the home of her son, Alvin, Baroda. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at trinity Lutheran Church, Glendora, with burial in Weesaw Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the Boyd Funeral Home, Bridgman, from 6 to 9 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to the church or Berrien County Cancer Society. Mrs. Backus was born Feb. 2, 1903, in Bridgman. Her husband, Emil, preceded her in death in 1975. Survivors include three sons, Alvin, Baroda, Julius, rising Fawn, Ga., Russell, Jackson, Mich.; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Hattie) Frier, Wyoming, Mrs. Edward (Edna) Thompson, Duncanville, Tex.; two brothers, Martin Hauch, Prudenville, Mich., J. Albert Hauch, St. Joseph; three sister, Mrs. Martha Kuyat, Mrs. Hattie Gaul, both of St. Joseph, Mrs. Lydia Rudlaff, Oconomowoe, Wis.; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.”
