Obituary for John Earl Bylund
Jonas Erland Bylund was born on September 25, 1894 near Ornskoldsvik, Sweden and passed away on December 18, 1990 at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital at the age of 96 years. He was the youngest child of Jonas Ersson Bylund and Anna Karolina (Wiklund) Bylund. The father Jonas Bylund died in 1895. Jonas Erland's sister Anna died of scarlet fever in 1897. On August 23, 1903, Anna left Sweden with her two youngest sons Herbert and Jonas and immigrated to the United States. They first traveled from Goteburg, Sweden to Liverpool, England and then left on the "SS Celtic", the largest sailing ship for immigrants at the time built by the White Star Line. Their little family arrived at Ellis Island in New York City, New York on September 13, 1903. After a series of medical and legal examinations, they were allowed into the country. It was at this time that Jonas Erland changed his name to John Earl. Anna and her sons traveled by train to Painesville, Ohio to join relatives there. After two years they traveled to Iowa and settled in the town of Coon Rapids. So John Earl grew up in a farming community in Iowa. He left us a memory of having to travel downhill to attend school in Sweden and in the winter doing that on a pair of skis (along with Herbert). Anna took a job as a cook at the Pingrey Ranch, south of town, and John Earl had the job of opening the cattle gate for fifty cents a week. John Earl met Flossie Edna Harvey, daughter of James Amos Harvey of Dedham and the late Elva Mae Clifford Harvey. Flossie was living near Viola Center, IA and they were married on November 24, 1915 in Audubon, IA. John Earl Bylund became a US citizen on April 27, 1921. Earl and Flossie were farmers throughout their married life in Audubon and Carroll counties in Iowa and later purchased a farm located nine miles north of Blair, NE on the river road. Five children were born to this union; Raymond Earl, Edna Eileen, Ida Marie, Orvil Wayne, and Edward LaVerne. All three boys joined the US Navy as young men and served in WWII. Earl and Flossie were proud to have twenty five grandchildren. On December 17 of 1963, Flossie passed away from a stroke at the Blair Memorial Hospital in Blair, NE. Earl continued to live at their farm home, adopting a cat he named "Mousie" for company. Later Earl moved into a house in Herman, NE and lived there a few years until moving to the Thomas Rest Haven nursing home in Coon Rapids and later the Audubon Friendship Home in Audubon, IA.
On December 21, 1990, funeral services were held for Earl at the Campbell Funeral Home in Herman, NE. He was buried at the Herman Cemetery next to his wife. Earl was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Erik Anton, Jonas Axel, Karl Wilhelm Herbert, sisters Agda Marie Freeman, and Anna Karolina II , and his son Raymond Earl (in 1985). Earl is survived by his daughters Edna Bell, Ida Meek, and his sons Orvil and Edward, twenty five grandchildren, nieces, nephew, other relatives, and friends.
