surname was spelled Cowan, ie Lettie Hewitt Cowan

Lettie Hewitt Cowen was the daughter of Rev James Hewitt and Elizabeth Apsley Osheal. Many years ago I speculated that her name might have been Letitia, however I now believe this to be incorrect. The name most often ascribed to her is Lettie or Letty, and this is shown in court and census documents. However, in her deed transactions she is shown in Pope County, Arkansas deeds and tax lists as S.L. Cowen. As a girl in Baptist church records, they recorded her as Sealy and her older sister Massey, but both girls really only used their middle names, ie Massey Jane Hewitt was called Jane or Jenny and Selah Lettie Hewitt was called Lettie.
In one Gordon County, GA tax list her name is actually spelled Mrs Eletta Cowen. Since a Bible record has her name written Selah Lettie Hewitt by a family member, I am using this. David Travillion Bunton

Field stone marker, buried beside daughter Clarinda Cowan Harris. I have been to her exact gravesite several times.

Lettie Hewitt was the wife of William Wallace Cowen. Children: Adaline, William Wallace, Joseph H., Clarinda Caledonia, Monroe, Leander, Rhoda and Sylvanus. Info from research of David Travillion Bunton.
