Bio of Rev. James Allen Hewitt of Spartanburg District, SC and Gordon County, GA
by David Travillion Bunton
Rev. James Hewitt was the son of John Hewitt and his wife Elender Forrester Hewitt. He was also known as James Allen Hewitt or Hewett.

He was ordained at Friendship Baptist Church in Spartanburg Distict, SC and later served in Union District, SC as well, before his removal to Georgia in the 1840s.

James Hewitt joined the Friendship Baptist church in Spartanburg District, SC in March 1803.His father John Hewitt and brother William Hewitt joined in Feb 1803 and in June 1803 his brother Richard Hewitt joined. In August 1803 Jethro O'Shields joined by experience and baptism. He was to become the father-in-law of James Hewitt upon James marriage to Elizabeth O'Sheal aka O'Shields. who was born in 1793 in Spartanburg District, SC.

James Hewitt was ordained at Friendship Baptist Church in Spartanburg Distict, SC and later served in Union District, SC as well, before his removal to Georgia in the 1840s.According to the minutes of the Friendship Baptist Church there were numerous references to James Hewitt aka James Hewett, Hewatt, Huatte, etc...including the following:

Sept and Oct 1841.In church conference Saturday before the first Lords day in September. meeting being opened by Bro James Huatte and granted Sister Sarah Oshield [note: she was the second wife of Jethro O'Shields and therefore James Hewitt's wifes step-mother.James Hewitt's wife was Elizabeth O'Shields or Osheal, the daughter of Jethro and Elizabeth O'Sheal] a letter of dismission. ...Elected James Huatte, Henry O'Shields [note, he was the brother in law of James Hewitt.Henry was the oldest brother of Elizabeth Osheal Hewitt]and Jo Smith delegates to the Broad River Association.Bro. James Huatte was ordained by Presbetry.

When he removed to Georgia, he continued as a minister and is referred to as Parson Hewett or Rev James Hewett and sometimes as Allen Hewett.

He resided in Fairmount, GA where his death occurred. According to the Bounty Land Warrant application by one of his daughters, Cassander Hewitt Cox, he died 20 April 1865 and she stated her mothers maiden name as Osheals. This same daughter eventually removed to Illinois where she later married a second time to John Albright and recorded on her 1885 marriage record that she was a native of Spartanburg District, SC and was the daughter of James Hewitt and Elizabeth O'Shields (ie Elizabeth O'Sheal or Elizabeth Osheal, daughter of Jethro Osheal).

There were records lost due to the Civil War, but the Revolutionary War Pension file of Cynthia, widow of William Coggin, records that Rev James Hewett married them in Gordon County, GA. Neighbors of Cythia Coggin (and Rev James Hewitt) testified for Mrs Coggin concerning her marriage, the loss of records due to the Civil War, and also the death in April 1865 of the minister who married them, Rev James Allen Hewett or Hewitt. The neighbors included David Smith and his wife Eliza H Smith, Robert R Grant and Augustus Simeon Liles. (note Robert R Grant's brother Richard George Washington Grant married Clarinda Hewitt, a daughter of Rev James Hewitt and Elizabeth Osheal).

Another daughter of Rev. Hewitt was Catherine M. Hewitt. According to the records of the Liberty Baptist Church, she was received by restoration on Sept 9, 1866. (by restoration meant that she had formerly been a member previous to Sept 1866. She probably joined at the same time as her parents). Times were difficult during the Civil War and afterward. James was buried in the cemetery with only a simple rock to mark his grave; his wife Elizabeth Osheal Hewitt was buried beside him only a few years later. A descendant remembered their graves, marked only with fieldstones, when she and her grandmother placed flowers on their graves many years ago. When she asked her grandmother who they were, she was told your ancestors James and Elizabeth Hewitt. The young girl asked her grandmother why they only had fields stones, and her grandmother told her stories of the Civil War and the hardships, but added, "that God will know their names because they believed..."

Rev. James Hewitt married Elizabeth Apsley Osheal of Spartanburg District, SC, the daughter of Jethro and Elizabeth Osheal.

Children of Rev James Hewitt and Elizabeth O'Sheal include Landon Hewitt, William B. Hewitt, Allen Jethro Hewitt, Caleb Hewitt and daughters Jane Hewitt West, Selah Letty Hewitt Cowen or Cowan, Cassandra Hewitt Cox Albright, Clarinda Hewitt Grant, Catherine Hewitt, Vicy Hewitt and some infants who died.
