Pioneer of Area Dies
Mrs. Velma Miller Succumbs Here At Age of 96
Mrs. Velma Jane Miller, 96, widow
of the late Horace B. Miller,
died at 8:30 a. m. today at the family
home, 608 Jefferson street. Death
was due to infirmities incident to
old age.
Her death followed by 10 days that
of her daughter, Mrs. Forest Jackson,
who resided with her mother.
The decedent was born in the
White Settlement section, south of
Valparaiso, on Jan. 2, 1853, a daughter
of Herman S. White and Ann
(Harvey) White.
She was united in marriage in 1871
to Horace B. Miller by the Rev.
L. S. Buckles, of the Valparaiso
Methodist church. For 83 years she
has lived in the same home on East
Jefferson street where she died. Her
husband preceded her in death a
number of years ago.
Surviving are one son, Edward L.
Miller, of Valparaiso; two granddaughters,
Mrs. Velma Thune. Valparaiso,
and Mrs. Hazel Waterston,
Hobart; three great grandchildren
and one great great grandchild.
Private memorial services will be
held at 2 p. m. Friday at the Bartholomew
funeral home, with The Rev.
Harvey J. Kleseir, of the First
Methodist church, of which she has
been a member for many years,
officiating. Burial will be In Graceland
cemetery.
Friends may call at the Bartholomew
funeral home, 102 Monroe
street, from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a. m. to 12 noon Friday.
