Charles John Wahlquist was born Carl Johann Walquist in Sweden to Anna Catrina Olofsdotter and Anders Frederic Walquist. When he was a young boy, he, his mother, and one of his sisters joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and emigrated to Utah, leaving his father behind. He returned to Sweden as a young man, but his father had died. He married Elizabeth Campbell and worked variously as a policeman, a schoolteacher, and other odd jobs while studying nights to become a lawyer. He was county attorney for Wasatch County, juvenile judge for Utah County and Wasatch County, county attorney for Duchesne County, mayor of Myton, and also a farmer. He died in Myton and was buried there, but when his wife died 12 years later in Ogden, Utah, and was buried in Heber City, his sons went to Myton and got his casket exhumed and reburied next to his wife in Heber City.
