With just an eighth-grade education, Mabel started her career as a clerk in the little country store in Myton, Utah. She moved to Salt Lake City and one day went in to ZCMI Department Store and asked to see the manager of the store. She asked him for a job directly, and he immediately hired her. She worked as a store clerk for a number of years, then moved to The Bon Marche in Ogden and became a buyer for the store. She became a buyer for all the Bon stores in the Intermountain west and was based in Boise, Idaho. Eventually she became an executive of American Stores, Inc. based in Minneapolis. She moved back to Utah and worked again for The Bon Marche until her retirement. To her many nieces and nephews she was Santa Claus at Christmas time.
