Samuel was the son of John and Nancy McCullough Jewell. The family came to Wood County about 1840 and settled in Plain Township. Sam married Louisa Johnson on 20 March 1856 in Wood County, and they had children: Martin, Nancy, John William, Elizabeth Minerva, Florence A., and two unnamed infants. Martin also died young. Sam was a farmer. He died from bowel problems at the age of 92 years 4 months and 26 days.
