Claude Mervin Hays, son of James M. and Emma Hays, was born September 1, 1896, on the family homestead located in Mt. Ayr Township, Osborne county, Kansas. He departed this life at the Plainville Rural Hospital, Plainville, Kansas, at the age of 65 years, 5 months and 5 days.
He received his education at the Pleasant Plain School. He spent most of his life in this community except for a few years spent with a brother and sister.
He had worked as a garageman; also in the creamery business but farming was his main occupation in which he was engaged at the time of his passing.
Claude was one of a large family. He was preceded in death by his father and mother and several brothers and sisters.
Left to mourn his passing are two sisters, Mrs Carl Strutt of Woodston; and Mrs J.B. Musgrove of Augusta; two brothers, Otto of Alton and Paul of Neosho, Missouri; and a host of loving nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was a congenial type of person, making friends easily and having no family of his own, Claude shared his affections with his nieces, nephews and other children of the community. He was dearly loved by them and will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
Services were held February 9, 1962 at the Chalk Mound Church with Rev. Edwin Adkinson officiating with Rev. Fred Cain assisting. Music as provided by Margaret and Jeanne Strutt with Mrs Van Strutt at the Piano.
Pall bearers were Norman Rubottom, Alvin Poore, John Strutt, Clayton Casper, Harvey Bice and Gerald Gager.
Interment was in the Pleasant Plain Cemetery.
