Martin Bechtel Downend was the son of Thomas and Mary Jane Bechtel Downend. Martin's father came to America with his parents, James and Mary Downend and three sisters. The family settled in Richland County, Ohio where Martin's parents met and married. Martin was born in Wayne County, Ohio. Martin's parents first migrated to Indiana briefly and then about 1862, they moved to Stark County, Illinois. Martin reached adulthood in Illinois and remained in Illinois when his parents and siblings continued their moves westward to Nebraska and later to northwestern Kansas.

Martin married Anna C. Brown, daughter of J.H. Brown on December 21, 1887, in Toulon Township, Illinois. Martin was a farmer and as he secured more land, he began raising Hereford cattle, Poland China hogs and Percheron horses.

Martin and his family were active in the Baptist Church at Toulon.

Martin and Ann had three children:
Florence (1891-1976) married Fred R. Wakeland
Leslie Lemur (1889-1950) married Cora Westerfield
Lucille (1902-?)
