Mary Jane married Thomas Downend in November, 1855 in Richland County, Ohio.
The family migrated first to Indiana and in 1862 to Stark County, Illinois. Homestead records for Thomas indicate that Thomas and Mary Jane were divorced about 1883 and Thomas then migrated to Kansas where the oldest daughter, Mary Gibbs, was homesteading with her husband.
In the 1900 Census, Mary Jane was living in Peoria, Illinois with her son Ernest and daughter Adah. In the 1910 Census, she was living with her daughter Adah Weller and her family. Mary Jane died in Toulon, Illinois, likely then living with her son Martin.
According to the 1900 US Census they had eight children, six living in 1900. Their children were:

Martin Bechtel (1860-1931) married Anna C. Brown
Loretta Alice (1864-1930) married David B. Ryman
