Thomas Downend was the son of James and Mary Downend. Thomas was born in England and immigrated with his parents to America in 1834. They settled in Ohio.

Thomas married Mary Jane Bechtel, daughter of David and Elizabeth Harmon Bechtel,in November of 1855 in Richland County, Ohio.

The family migrated first to Indiana and in 1862, they migrated to Stark County, Illinois. Homestead records for Thomas indicate that he and Mary Jane were divorced in about 1883, before he migrated to Jefferson township, Rawlins County, Kansas. He lived in a dugout as he began to establish his land and by 1884 had built a sod house. His homestead was not far from his daughter Mary Gibbs and later another daughter, Loretta Ryman.

In 1893, Thomas fell from a hay wagon and suffered serious injuries. He died in Cumberland, Thomas County, Kansas and was buried in the Cumberland Cemetery.

According to the 1900 US Census Thomas and Mary Jane had eight children, six living in 1900. Their children were:

Loretta Alice (1864-1930) married David B. Ryman
Adah I. (1882-after 1930) married Fred G. Weller
