Obituary
Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 10, 2009 at a 1:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. John Berchman Roman Catholic Church in Cankton for Emathilde Venable Savoie, age 89, the former Emathilde Venable, who passed away Monday, December 7, 2009 at 11:00 p.m. at Acadia/St. Landry Hospital in Church Point.
Interment will be in Bellevue Memorial Park in Opelousas. The Rev. Henry J. Broussard, pastor of St. John Berchman Catholic Church, will officiate at the services.

Musical selections will be provided by Valerie Andrus. The songs will be "Notre Pere," "Hail Mary Gentle Woman," "On Eagle's Wings," "How Great Thou Art," "The Old Rugged Cross," and "You Will Always Be A Child In My Eyes."

Mrs. Savoie was a native and lifelong resident of Cankton. She was a parishioner of St. John Berchman Catholic Church in Cankton. Mrs. Savoie was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Ashton Savoie of Cankton; two sons, Donald R. Savoie of Omaha, NE and Glynn W. Savoie of Cankton; two daughters, Verdell Shonks and her husband, Eddie, of Indianapolis, IN and Mae Brooks and her husband, David, of Opelousas, LA; seven grandchildren, Tracy B. Munnerlyn and her husband, Jacob, Danielle Brooks, Eric Savoie, Keith Savoie and his wife, Jill, Kimberly Kubert and her husband, Greg, Sarah S. Taylor, and Desiree S. Breaux; nine great grandchildren; and four sisters, Anna Belle Cormier of Iowa, LA, Velma Babineaux and her husband, Roy, of Cankton, Elvie V. Dugas of Carencro, and Mary Bordelon of Marksville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dozita Venable and the former Elvina Faul, both natives of Cankton; three brothers, Oliver Venable, Dalton Venable and Nalton Venable; and two sisters, Mabel Veronie and Hazel V. Bourgeois.

A rosary will be prayed by Elaine Richard at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 2:30 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Wednesday and will continue from 8:00 a.m. until service time on Thursday.

Melancon Funeral Home, Evangeline Memorial Gardens Chapel, 4117 N. University Ave., Carencro was in charge of arrangements.
