Benjamin William McAfee entered this world 11 February, 1861, the second of six children born of the marriage of Samuel L McAfee and Caroline J (Kirby) McAfee, in Guthrie, Callaway, Missouri. Ben's father passed away in 1876, and Ben was soon thereafter working for the Railroad and helping to provide for his bereaved family. On 20 December 1887, he and Minnie Dora Jesse, of Auxvasse, Callaway County were married in Fulton of the same county. A short time after that, they made their home in Mexico, Audrain, Missouri, where their ten children were born between the years of 1889 and 1906. Two of the children died in infancy, and their firstborn, Cecil, was killed by lightening years later when he had barely reached the age of majority.

The family moved to Centralia between 1906 and 1910, where Ben continued working for the Railroad, using his skills and experience for many years as a section foreman for the Chicago and Alton Railroad, from which he retired several years before his death.

Mr. McAfee was 81 when he met his death on 09 March, 1942 in the Audrain County Hospital, Mexico, Audrain, Missouri, following a long illness with arteriosclerosis and nephritis. He was predeceased by Minnie, his wife of 53 years, who died on 19 Aug 1940.

He was survived by five daughters and two sons: Mrs. Erma B. Lanham, Mrs. Jessie P. Sparks and Miss Hazel N. McAfee, all of Centralia; Mrs. Myrtle M. Norrell and Mrs. Grace M. Walker, both of Kansas City; the Rev. Joseph H. McAfee of Liberty and Howard C. McAfee of Palmyra; also, one brother, Clint McAfee and a sister, Mrs. Florence Martin, both of Seattle, Washington; as well as numerous grandchildren.
