Erma was the second of ten children born to Benjamin William and Minnie Dora (Jesse) McAfee on April 12, 1891 in Mexico, Audrain, Missouri. She was a schoolteacher at Pleasant Plain School in Audrain County, Missouri. She married Irby Ellis Lanham, a railroad worker, in or about 1923. Three sons were born of the marriage: Joseph, Robert and William. Their family resided in rural Centralia, Boone, Missouri. Irby died at the age of 71 in Centralia in 1961. Erma lived to be 86 years old, meeting her death in 1977 in Belleville, St Clair, Illinois.
