On March 14, 1861, in Huron County, Ontario, James was married to Miss Margaret Sharp, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Hunter) Sharp, natives of Scotland and Ontario. The couple had ten children, four of whom lived to adulthood. For six years after marriage, Mr. Hanley was engaged in agriculture in Huron County, Ontario, removing thence to Oakland County, Michigan. After a stay there of a year and a half, he removed to Lapeer County, and purchased 40 acres of wild, heavily timbered land. He lived on the place 14 years, brought it to the best possible farming condition, erected good building and started an orchard. He sold the place for nearly eight times what it cost him, and in April, 1881, relocated to Midland County and purchased 80 acres, mostly timbered, where he has since resided.
James, despondent, due to continued poor health and damage to his bean crop, took his own life. Mr. Hanley was sick for many years, suffering great pain and being compelled to sit in a chair to sleep. Left to mourn his death are his spouse; sons William and John; daughters Mary Ann and Alwilda.
