The coroner of the Huron District, Morgan J Hamilton, viewed the body and held an inquiry for the Sovereign Lady Queen Victoria. He took sworn testimony from an eye witness who stated he saw Hugh in the tree and later under the tree. The witness tried all he could to revive Hugh but it was out of his power to do so. He was carried back to his mothers house where he lay until the coroner arrived. Brother John gave sworn testimony that the body under his direction was that of his brother Hugh Hanley. The coroner ruled that Hugh Hanley was killed accidentally and by misfortune by the falling of a tree.
