DEATH TAKES FRED KIES, 66, FRIDAY A.M.

Fred Kies, who made his home with his daughter, Mrs. John Gerdes, passed away at 4:50 o'clock Friday morning, February 4th. He had been afflicted for several years with angina pectoris.

Funeral services were held at 1 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Gerdes home and at 2 o'clock from the Wheatland Presbytarian church, with the Rev. C. Walter officiating.

"Under His Wing", "Rock of Ages" and "Does Jesus Care?" were sung by the congregation

The pallbearers were Ben Freese, Chris Bohling and Claus Huisenga of Lake View, and Herman von Glan, Peter Huendling and Gottlieb von Glan of Breda.

Among those paying the last tribute of respect to the deceased were Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kies and Mr. and Mrs. Will Kies of Odebolt, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Herrig and family of Storm Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Ezra Kies and family of Wall Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Nees and Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Nees of Mt. Carmel, Mr. and Mrs. John Huisenga and family of Breda, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Voss of Wall Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Flink of Lytton, Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Faucett of Lake City, Mr. and Mrs. Al Underberg of Carroll, Herman Hinkennius of Arcadia and Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Daniels and Mr. ad Mrs. Carl Hess of Lidderdale.

Fred Carl Andrew Kies, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kies (deceased), was born on Halstead Street, Chicago, Ill., on August 10, 1981. He was one year old at the time of the great Chicago fire and his mother used to relate how she wrapped him up in some old blankets and fled with him out into the night to escape the flames.

In 1873 the family came to Viola township, Sac county, Iowa, locating on what is now the John Claussen farm. Here the deceased spent his childhood and his youth working for his father on the farm.

On June 6, 1894, he was united in marriage with Hiska Flink at the home of the bride's parents, the Rev. L. Hundling performing the ceremony. This union was blessed with six children, one son and five daughters.

The years of their marriage they moved onto a farm in Levy township, Sac county, which was located on the county line dividing Sac and Crawford counties. Here they resided until 1918 when they bought their own farm 2 miles straight south of Wall Lake. He resided on this farm for a period of 13 years, or until 1931. On May 25, 1928, Mrs. Kies was called to her eternal reward.

Of the last 6 years of his life, Mr. Kies spent two with his daughter Esther, (Mrs. John Huisenga) and four with his daughter Carrie (Mrs. John Gerdes). For short periods he made his home with his son, Ezra.

Mr. Kies was baptized in the Lutheran church at Chicago. On March 22, 1891, he was by confirmation received into the fellowship of the Wheatland Presbytarian church with Ricke Bruns, Tjark Jansen and his two sisters, Katie and Wilhelmine. This class was the Rev. Hundling's first confirmation class.

Due to his faithfulness to the church, the congregation deemed him worthy to serve as Elder of the church and so unanimously elected him on April 2, 1918, in place of Elder Gottlieb von VGlan, who was removed two months previously by death. He was officially installed to his office on April 14, 1918, and served acceptably until his death, a period of almost 20 years.

In September of 1936 he was obliged to undergo a serious operation which brought him relief but not the desired health. He bore his affliction with Christian patience and fortitude. He was content with his lot and seldom complained about it or charge God, the government, or his fellowmen with his financial misfortune. His death occurred on Feb. 4, 1938, at the age of 66 years, 6 months and 25 days.

He is survived by one son, Ezra, of Wall Lake, and by five daughters, Margaret, wife of Emil Voss of Wall Lake, Bena, wife of Carl Herrig of Storm Lake, Carrie, wife of John Gerdes, and Hanna, both of Lake View, and Esther, wife of John Huisenga of Breda. Also by 16 grandchildren, by two brothers Frank, of Carnarvon and Carl, of Lake View; three sisters, Minnie, wife of Joe Nees, of Mt. Carmel, Mrs. Katie Brauer, of Lake View, and Emma, wife of Mike Schoneboom of Wall Lake.
