Mr. Ray was born in Williamsburg County on May 24, 1936, a son of the late John Causey Ray and Sadie Bell Taylor Ray. He attended Williamsburg County schools and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. Ray was a retired carpenter and cabinetmaker. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are four sons, William ''Billy'' E. Ray Jr. and L. Alan Ray, both of Georgetown, Gary D. Ray of Andrews, and Ed Madden of Hemingway; two daughters, Julie R. Flegel of Andrews and Sheila R. Locklair of Georgetown; three brothers, John Leo Ray and David Legrand Ray, both of Andrews, and James Calvin Ray of Bonneau; two sisters, Retha Mae R. Watford and Edith R. Cooper, both of Andrews; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Ray was predeceased by a son, Joey Del Ray.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2004, in Black River Original Free Will Baptist. Officiating will be the Rev. Jeff Cockrell, the Rev. Murray Powell, and the Rev. Steve Wilson. Burial will follow in Piney Forest Cemetery. The Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
